Yoooooooo, which was better? The dramatic killing of Danny or the quick and shocking Jessica massacre? I don’t know, it’s lowkey funny writing these kill scenes.
Ironically, I started this series to show off my idea of an X-Force team (still hope you like them) but I guess I should spend these background sections giving my reviews on the Defenders series. I only watched the collection of them over the last year, since Charlie Cox showed up in No Way Home. I didn’t think it was necessary to watch but he seemed to play an interesting character from a show everyone says is really good. Eventually I got to watching Jessica Jones.
I did not watch these in order. Never hearing of the character beforehand my first sight of her was in the Defenders crossover. I had watched DD 1-3 before going back to Def. Her actress played the character well there so I watched it after finishing Punisher. In general, the show is very interesting. Led by a female lead, it was also the most different to its peers because it did not deal with organized crime. All of her villains were personal problems that attacked her quite directly. But she’s also not a fighter like the others so her opponents are either just as powerless or aren’t looking to fight her. This makes every episode more of a psychological war than the ones between Murdock and Fisk.
First we start with Killgrave, the Purple Man. I actually read the original Daredevil chapter introducing him before watching the first season so I was hyper excited. And he was acted by David Tennent? Banger! He is one of my favorite villains from these series just because of his relationship with Jessica. Okay, I don’t like that he’s completely smitten by Jessica (because he seems much older) but everything else about him was top notch. I love that he also continues to haunt Jessica throughout the show after he dies.
The other villains are uh I mean how could follow up on Tennent. The mystery throughout season 2 was the interesting part but seeing that it was just Jessica’s estranged mother (spoiler) just kind of lost me. At least the Whizzer made an appearance. Also at least the death of the mom lead to one of my favorite arcs in the Defender’s Saga. The Hellcat Arc! So I’ll talk about that more in the next chapter.
I did like other characters in JJ such as Malcom and Hogarth. Malcom doesn’t have room to show up here but I really liked him in the second and third seasons. First season, he was basically a comedic relief turned civil support. But I like that he gets his own stories later and challenges he has with darkness. Hogarth is definitely not someone I would befriend in real life but in fiction she works as a pretty good lawfully neutral foil to any marvel hero. She’s selfish, conniving, shameless and yet lies for good reputation. A freaking banger if I say so. I try my best to emulate this here although I don’t know about her characterization in the comics cause I think she has a smaller role. We will see her later in the court case.
Last thing before the chapter, Deadpool and his 4th wall breaks. I thought very shortly about what exactly he should break the rules around. He does make some out of time references but so will other characters. But I decided that he should be able to reference any already existing media which obviously doesn’t include this one. Of course, I’ll also use his voice to self critique this piece along with the concepts it introduces like the conversation that starts the chapter…
